I’m a HUGE fan of Friends, the sitcom (I don’t think there’s a Friends trivia game out there that I cannot win 😂)

So when I recently discovered this incredible true story about Lisa Kudrow, I was absolutely fascinated.

Did you know Lisa Kudrow was originally cast as Roz on Frasier? So here’s where the story gets painful (and perfect!)…

Lisa gets through the audition for Roz on Frasier, lands the role and shows up to the run-through for the first episode, probably feeling super excited about her new role.

That’s when director James Burrows delivers four words no one wants to hear, “This isn’t working.” Lisa was fired before they even filmed the pilot!

She describes it as “devastating” and tried desperately to salvage the situation, asking “What can I do?”

But as I like to say, the Universe always dreams a much bigger dream for us than we could ever dream for ourselves because here’s what happened next…

After getting dropped from Frasier, Lisa’s agent didn’t even want her to take the tiny role of “waitress” on another hit 90s sitcom Mad About You. But Lisa felt she wasn’t “in a position to say no.”

That small role led to 5 more episodes on Mad About You, which then led to… her audition for Friends!

And we all know how that story ends. Lisa Kudrow became Phoebe Buffay, she won an Emmy, and touched millions of hearts for 10 glorious seasons.

I want to say it again: The Universe always dreams a bigger dream than you can possibly dream for yourself.

If Lisa had been Roz on Frasier, she never would have become the Phoebe we know and love.

She wouldn’t have given us “Smelly Cat” or taught us that it’s perfectly okay to be wonderfully, authentically weird!

Sometimes what feels like rejection is actually the Universe saying, “I have something so much better in mind for you.”

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately because I know many of us (myself included!) have those times when we’re trying to make something work — a relationship, a job, a creative project — and it feels like we’re pushing a boulder uphill while wearing roller skates.

What if those moments of “This isn’t working” are actually sacred redirections?

What if the Universe is gently (or sometimes not so gently) moving us away from our small dreams to make space for the magnificent ones we can’t even see yet?

Maybe that job rejection saves you from settling for less than your true calling. Maybe that relationship ending clears the path for your actual soulmate. Maybe that business idea that flopped was redirecting you from good enough business to something absolutely extraordinary.

The next time something doesn’t work out the way you planned, take a 1 Healing Breath and whisper to yourself: “The Universe is dreaming a bigger dream for me.”
